I found parts of this book truly fascinating. Who knew that you could even have a stroke that completely shut down one half of your brain but left the other half functioning normally? Think you are truly left brained or right brained? Find out for sure here!

I suffer from a few severe mental illness and chronic pain conditions (Depression, Anxiety, PTSD, Fibromyalgia, CFS/ME, Ehlers Danlos, Degenerative Disc Disease, etc.), which greatly affects my life and makes me want to advocate for others going through similar things. That was interesting!
Am I write to assume she did eventually regain language skills since she authored the book? Or did she have alot of help writing it?

After the stroke, she did slowly start to regain some function of her left brain. Some things took many years to come back, but language actually came back to her sooner than many other left brained activities (such as math). Much of it seemed to have to do with which parts of her left brain were most damaged by the stroke.

Thanks for following up on my question. I’m glad she was able to recover at least as much as she did.

I read this book while I was in grad school for speech pathology, and it was very interesting. I have recommended it to many individuals with family members suffering from Strokes and brain injuries as well as professional caregivers because it does such a great job helping the reader understand what a person is going through; especially right after a stroke. I personally liked the beginning, but understanding the technical side is part of what I do for a living. 🙂 I completely agree with you about the last few chapters. Great review!

Yeah, parts of it were certainly fascinating and I do think knowledge like this could make a huge difference in how healthcare treats stroke victims. I probably would have liked the beginning was I a more technical sciency person. It is strange, some science jargon I really enjoy in books, but in others I just don’t feel the interest. Guess I’m weird like that.
