Last night while I was watching the 4th season of American Horror Story (Freak Show), I had the idea to write a poem using a similar technique to the “blackout poetry” idea, but instead of using print, I would take a few random phrases or words from the tv show I was watching and put them together to make a poem. It was pretty fun and I do like what I came up with:
American Horror Story

Laundry detergent commercials
offer their brand of oddity
to the outside world.
Should you hear
sirens call,
remember,
nice don’t pay the bills!
So what do you guys think of my idea? Do you like the resulting poem? It is odd, but I like it.

I love it. I do something related – I write down phrases I hear on TV (or other places too, but here we are mentioning TV) and then use them in the Little Vines I do on my poetry blog Poetry Marathons. It is super fun to do this kind of thing and the ideas it gives you, well, I know my mind would not have thought them up on my own. I say, keep it up!

What’s blackout poetry?

It is where you take a page of writing (from a book or magazine for instance) and blackout all the words but a few, making a random poem out of it. Kind of like magnetic poetry, but using the words available on a single page.
