Sometimes I worry about fluoride…specifically ingesting too much of it. Too much fluoride can cause a condition called skeletal fluorosis, which is often mistaken for arthritis or fibromyalgia. Most people know our toothpastes and other dental products often contain fluoride, but many don’t realize all the other sources of fluoride we ingest every day.
There is fluoridated water of course, which has been a point of contention for years. Should the government put fluoride in the drinking water? Is it necessary? Especially when most Americans use toothpaste with fluoride anyhow? Did you know that both green and black tea (two of my favorite drinks) are a high source of fluoride? It often has way more fluoride in it than the water, often over the “safe limits” established by the government (which are still debatable).
Because our water is fluoridated, almost everything made with water stands a chance of being fluoridated too – all our drinks, alcohol, soups, fruits, grains, vegetables…even our meat! (Often our food becomes contaminated with fluoride more due to pesticides rather than our water, and our meat gets contaminated because animals eat food with these pesticides in them.)
Some people claim antidepressants like Prozac can contribute to fluoride poisoning, although this is definitely debatable. I’ve heard scientists argue that because of the way the chemicals bind together in the drug that the fluoride should all get washed out, but who knows for sure?
Maybe I am just an anxious, sometimes paranoid person (all true), but maybe this really is a problem that is often ignored or overlooked. After all, fluoride is still a poison.
Some fears are unavoidable… Very informative post.. 😃

Bring on the toxins, I’m not giving up my tea 😉

Yeah, I love my tea. If this really is an issue, I wish they would figure out a way to remove it. I’m not sure if that is too hard to do though since the fluoride is actually in the tea leaves. They do say the higher end teas tend to have less fluoride.

If it was a major issue, probably the vast majority of people in the UK would have melting bones by now.

Well, there have been actual cases of longtime tea drinkers developing skeletal fluorosis, so it definitely can happen. Also, many times the symptoms are just dismissed as arthritis. What are your thoughts on the prozac/fluoride issue? I know you research meds a lot. Do you agree that the chemicals bind together and so the fluoride is less likely to be left in the system?

I don’t buy the Prozac/fluoride thing. The fluorine in fluoxetine is covalently bonded, not ionically, so it’s firmly attached and not wandering off on its own.

I like to think that lol. I take Prozac, so I hate to think of further poisoning myself more than our tainted food already does 😦 I think much of the issue is pesticides in general. We know they poison us in our food supply, and studies have shown even organic foods often have high levels of pesticides.

Yeah that’s definitely an issue that could use more action.

I’m sort of the “Meh, EDS teeth are actually more brittle and prone to problems – in addition to just being crooked typically- anyways. I could probably do with all the extra teeth benefits I can get.” But, I also lived for enough years in places with really gross tasting tap water the issue also probably was a moot point by default.”

Well, I seriously doubt it would ever be a problem in the US of not getting enough fluoride lol. It is in everything! The rest of the world maybe.

Maranda, if you’re worried about fluoride you should check out BioMin toothpaste. (www.biomin.co.uk) BioMin C doesn’t contain any fluoride while its BioMin F contains much less fluoride than most toothpastes.

Great post! I think most people are unaware of these risks and unaware that fluoride is a poison. Not a fan either! We didn’t allow fluoride rinses for our kids when they were in school.

I heard someone say the other day that even though their parents didn’t sign the permission slip for the fluoride rinses, that the school still gave it to them every time. I wonder if that happens often?

It certainly does. I’ve refused things (we have our own insurance) and gotten a panicked call from the kids (when they were little) that the school nurse was insisting!! We had to teach our kids why we made certain decisions and then ensure that when in doubt, always refuse and demand we be called. I found the schools to be a huge challenge, raising my kids.

Maranda, you have presented an informative post, and the discussion has been lively. When my daughters were growing up, we lived in a small town where the drinking water contained higher than normal levels of flouride. As a result, the girls had few cavities, but their teeth required whitening procedures many years later. Thankfully, the town built a new water treatment plant, and the naturally occurring levels of flouride were reduced to a much lower amount.

So fluoride yellows your teeth?

My daughter’s teeth didn’t really yellow, but the enamel appeared dull and not as bright from the concentrated fluoride.

Oh, ok. Interesting to know.

People still think fluoride is one of those conspiracy theory things.. but then you can’t convince people of truth that is right in front of them…
I used to take workout supplements. For some reason one day, I just got to thinking about how much they were helping or hurting me. I started researching the ingredients and got an awakening..
Since then, I’ve been looking at everything I buy Carrageenan, Red 40, yellow 5 are in most everyday things we eat and drink and they’re just as bad as fluoride.
And I hate to say it but the Non GMO Verified thing is sketchy..
Everything has a level of poison… 😕

Yeah, even “organic” is often not organic.
