EEG Update & Going Gluten-Free

Had my EEG yesterday morning. It wasn’t too bad. The flashing strobe light part was almost kind of like what I imagine doing psychedelic drugs would be like – all the swirling lights and patterns…it was kind of crazy. I was supposed to nap for like 15 minutes or so, but just couldn’t fall asleep. I’m hoping I won’t have to do the home sleep study, but I guess we’ll see what the doctor thinks. The gel they put on my hair to keep the electrodes connected drove me crazy, so I had to come right home and wash it out.

Other than that, not much exciting is going on. I am attempting to embrace a mostly gluten-free diet in hopes that it helps my digestive and chronic inflammatory issues, but it is hard because many of my favorite foods (pasta, pizza, bread, cereal, cookies, etc.) have to be eliminated or replaced with gluten-free substitutes which don’t always taste as good or have the same texture. As an autistic gal, food texture matters A LOT to me and it takes a good long while for me to get used to changes. Thank goodness a few mainstream cereals are already gluten free (like Cheerios, Lucky Charms, most Chex varieties, Fruity/Cocoa Pebbles, and a few more).

My mood today is rather blah. Just not feeling much of anything, except tired.

  1. Maranda, I hope the tiredness lifts and that you achieve something special as if you were only given this one day! Check out Louis Schwartzberg’s nature beauty gratitude Tedtalk, I hope you enjoy it, particularly from 3.30 minutes onwards.

      1. Yeah, that is rough. I try not eat a lot of dairy either because I have lactose intolerance, but most cheeses don’t affect me nearly as bad as straight milk or ice cream for instance.

  2. Glutinos cookies if you like oreos, and Udis for your gf pizza dough, bagels and bread. But, if you aren’t full celiac, consider also true 36-hour sourdough. It breaks down enough of the wheat proteins I’m allergic to to let me have some real stuff . But, my wheat allergy won’t so far lead to full-scale anaphylaxis, so take the sourdough advice with a healthy ‘grain’ of salt considering your own health. But, trust me on the Glutinos and Udis. They taste the most “real” of most gf products I’ve tested since having to suck it up and admit that I’m too reactive to wheat now to just keep ignoring my allergy test results.

    1. I am definitely not anaphylaxis level allergic or intolerant. I have often wondered if some level of gluten allergies adds to my IBS, colitis, and chronic widespread inflammation though. I know it is common for those on the autism spectrum to have gluten allergies anyhow, and I do have other food intolerances and a ton of other allergies.

  3. My son (age 7 at the time) had 2 EEGs last year. He was supposed to sleep for the sleep deprived one but he really couldn’t manage it (he usually takes melatonin to help him sleep so I’m not surprised) They still found some abnormalities despite it all – amazing as he also refused to do some of what the Drs asked for. I hope yours shows what it needs to (or not) and no further testing is required. Good luck on going Gluten free.

  4. Those strobe lights didn’t sit well with me, at all, for days afterward. Hoping the results turn out as you’d like. Whole Foods has some great gluten free alternatives. Daiya makes gluten free, dairy free, soy free stuff and it’s really yummy. Hoping you’re able to find some stuff you enjoy!
