
Warning: Gross poop talk.
This past week has been a digestive nightmare. I went to the doctor last week about my recent migraine issues and we also discussed the worsening of my IBS. I used to have IBS-D (diarrhea), but lucky me switched over a few years to IBS-C (constipation). It is an ongoing issue that is made worse whenever I have to take a lot of painkillers and certain other medications (like many of the ones I take for migraines and the symptoms they bring on).
Before you ask, I do all the stuff you are supposed to do. High fiber, prunes, stool softeners, milk of magnesia, walking, gentle yoga, and I’ve tried other things like Miralax which I didn’t like and didn’t work well for me. So anyhow, the doctor put me on Linzess, which is a medicine made specifically for IBS-C.
The first day I took it, it worked well for what it was supposed to do, but it also gave me a high fever, horrible all-day nausea, extreme dizziness, stomach and bowel pain, and fighting off vomiting. At the doctor’s recommendation, I quit taking it. We are scheduling another appointment to discuss other options. So since then it was another 4 days of bad constipation and then I took an OTC laxative because I couldn’t take it anymore and when I took that it caused another day of nausea, dizziness, stomach pain, and wanting to vomit (none of which is normal for me with an OTC laxative). At least I didn’t have a fever this time.
Now I’m staring to worry maybe something more is wrong than just the IBS. I hope not, but I generally know how my body reacts to things, and it worries me when that changes.
Oh that’s awful! I hope your doctor is able to come up with something else!

I can’t possibly like this post, because I HATE that you’re having so many problems. I’ve been suffering with constipation for over a year now, but my doctor tends to ignore me talking about it because I’ve refused to have a colonoscopy. I’ve tried the lots of fiber route, but without much success. One food, Twizzler’s Cherry Bites, always gives me diarrhea, so when I get desperate enough, I forgo worrying about the sugar content (as a diabetic) and eat quite a bit. I hope you find better luck – and quickly!

I wish there was a food that always guaranteed diarrhea for me lol. There used to be. A lot of fried foods and ice cream used to almost guarantee it, but not anymore.

If I had to wager a guess, I’d say you must be doing too much to your body and brain that it doesn’t want to function prooperly…er, properly. You were previously suffering diarrhea, and now you suffer from constipation? And, you’re taking a cocktail of drugs, as well as doing so many things in hopes of balancing yourself? It sounds like overkill. I am not sure if Asperger’s people can imagine…but imagine, if you can, trying to make a computer do something by typing in a dozen different commands a dozen different ways. You hit the Windows key at the same time you hit Control, Alt, Delete and 9 other possible coded pathways to get something to work; the computer blows a circuit and freezes or crashes.
Your body is crashing. Yes, you have problems. But, try less modern medicine, don’t do much of anything. Try getting down to basics. Try eating the BRAT diet to reset your internal pipes. Slow everything down to figure out what is causing what so you don’t cross wires. If you flip all of the switches and then turn to doctors for help, they’re likely to just prescribe everything you can afford and let you suffer the consequences while they reap the rewards. All those commercials that tell you to ask your doctor about this drug and that are very wicked souls looking for a profit, taking advantage of those who know no better.
Constipation can be caused by both biological factors AND mental factors. Depending upon how stressed or emotional you are, you could be cutting off biological flow. Some people laugh and pee. Some people get so tense they cannot poop. They probably have a high-fat diet and lack fiber, too. But, tension prevents the flow of fluids and waste. So, when you can completely relax on the toilet, you’ll be amazed how you flow. But, sit full of nervousness, anger or some other frustration, and you’ll likely try to force the waste out…which is not good.
Yoga can work wonders, but it doesn’t work as well for everyone and requires practice to properly benefit from it, like Tai Chi.
If you say you know how your body “normally” responds to various foods and other stimuli, GOOD! Trust that instinct and rule out what is causing the difference. Medication could be the problem. Probably IS the problem. Every medication I have taken has some nasty side effect which makes me wonder what good it really is. The last one I took, for blood pressure, make it difficult for me to swallow. When I told my doctor, they got quiet and concerned I would push a lawsuit. I took the hint and canceled further use. I will live naturally with the risk of dying.

Honestly, I wonder the same things sometimes, particularly about the medicines being the cause of some of my issues. I often wonder why the medicines that are supposed to treat certain things also say they can cause those very same things as side effects. I actually have tried getting off the meds and going natural and that didn’t always work out very well at all either. Maybe there needs to be a balance, but it is hard to figure out what medicines I might actually need and what are doing more harm than good.

Because the medicine is like a computer program, and we are all a bit different but probably able to be put in categories.
So, maybe one medicine works on category A people, but you’re a category B. So, you get side effect 2. Then, medicine 2 works on category B people–good for you–but clashes with medicine 1. Thus, you get side effect 3.
Some computer software doesn’t work well with other computer software. And, some doesn’t work on certain computers.
And, the medicine, though it contains elements found in nature in some strange places, is man-made. And, as far as I can tell, we’re still dumb cave people who haven’t gotten the wheel just right.
Most people are advised to take some kind of meds, and I worry it’s just pushing for sales. The doctors get paid by their bosses who get paid for pushing a drug from the manufacturer. Who wouldn’t want quick cash instead of actually working with people and being human and responsible for their actions? It’s easier to sign a waiver, hand out pills and go home with cash while the insurance companies sort out the lawsuits. A big stinking load of crap.
And, once you’re on meds, especially a dangerous cocktail of them, it’s like disarming a bomb to safely step down from what they do to you. So, I feel accepting any meds is like strapping TNT to your body. Good luck.
And, will your doctor help you figure out what meds you can cut out or make you feel stupid for wanting to quit? Or, take you off one and then suggest an alternative.
So many complex drugs and complex medical plans to keep us all naive and cattle-like.

Maranda, I am so sorry you are suffering! I asked my significant other, Robert, exactly what he did to get rid of the migraines that plagued him for 30 years. His migraines lasted for several days and caused nausea as well as pain. He no longer takes medications for migraines, and he almost never has migraines anymore.
Try 200 mg Vitamin B2 twice a day for a month plus a multi B (or multivitamin with B vitamins) to prevent migraines. This will not treat migraines, but after a month, they will likely go away.
Once you get rid of the migraines, you can stop the painkillers that may be causing the constipation.
Have you tried the FODMAP diet? It is widely available online and helps you learn which foods to avoid to improve IBS symptoms. After following this diet strictly for a week, you should see significant improvement. You then can reintroduce foods one at a time to see which ones are a problem for you.Then eliminate the problem foods permanently. This has been helpful to Robert when the doctor could not help him.

Thanks for the tips. I do actually take a multivitamin with B vitamins (Centrum Multivitamin + Omega 3). Are they not the right kind or something?

You just need to add the additional 200 mg of B2 twice a day to the multiple with B complex you are already taking. Let me know if it helps. β€ Hope you feel better soon!

I also suffer from IBS and recently started getting extreme migraines. Just had one that lasted over a week. When my stomach isnβt acting up itβs my head! I feel your pain!!!

Prunes worked ok for a very long time bt started having regular problems and switched to kiwi fruit. Now their effect seems to be wearing off. I wonder if i should try elimination – starting with wheat and dairy.

Never heard of using kiwi fruit. I do use prunes now and then. I’ve heard of people using pineapple too. I’ve tried the elimination thing, but it didn’t really help too much.
