This month I did the May 2018 My First Reading Club unboxing and review on my YouTube channel (Maranda’s Toys & Books), so I figured I would post the video here in case anyone wanted to see which children’s books I got this month for only $9.99 plus S&H! This box is always SUCH a great deal! Definitely recommended for families!
I don’t have a whole lot to say today, so thought I’d share a few more cute puzzles I’ve done recently 🙂 All of these came from Dollar Tree, so they were nice and cheap!
Another post for you today! My husband took me out to do a bit of shopping therapy to try to help get me out of my depressed funk. The weather outside is absolutely abysmal (constant rain and gloom), but I still had fun!
We went to Toys R Us, which is already marking everything down for the store closing. I am terribly sad to see Toys R Us go, and hope that somehow they are able to make a comeback at some point. There are so few toy stores around anymore! Here is what I found today there:
The “Bee Happy” baby outfit was 20% off and is Newborn size, so it should fit my reborn doll. If not, I’m sure it will fit some of my stuffed animals. I just thought the bee motif was too cute to pass up. I also picked up the Despicable Me unicorn mealtime set that I have wanted for a while. I love the unicorn from the movie, and I actually use these types of plastic cartoon cups, bowls, and plates myself more than I use regular dishware.
After Toys R Us, we did a little thrifting. I got a fun Playpad activity book (these are fun to do while I’m watching YouTube vids), some new pencils, and a couple more newborn size outfits for my doll. The green outfit has a cute orange whale on it and I also found a cute pair of brand new monkey booties.
This weekend I did some thrift store shopping! I found a few cute outfits for my new reborn doll (whom I decided to name Amelia after a character in a YA book I read recently called “A Tragic Kind of Wonderful”). For about six bucks I got these three outfits for her:
I also found this cute preemie 3-piece giraffe and elephant set for only $5:
Lastly, we went to a new bargain used bookstore, which sells bundles of children’s books (around 10 books for $5). Part of the fun of buying the bundle is that you can’t really see what all you get until after you buy it, so it is somewhat of a surprise when you open the package and see what all books you got:
Of the books I got in this bundle, my favorites are the “Spooky Friends”, “Cinderella” (from the live action movie version), Elmo’s World, and the “Penguin Skating Party” ones. I also picked up the cute cloth alphabet blocks you see to the right of the books in the photo for only $.99 at the thrift store where I got the baby clothes.
I told you all that soon I would have a new subscription box to share and review and it is here! This subscription box is called “My First Reading Club” and they have a wide variety of ages you can pick from to receive at least 3 or 4 brand new children’s books each month. The best part is it only costs $9.99 (plus shipping)! Often, you recoup the entire price in just ONE book!
For this first month I picked the “Just Starting Out” age group, which is 2 and under I believe. However, I have upped the age group for my next box because I would like to receive some regular picture books and not just board books. Anyhow, here is what I received this month:
- A Disney Frozen “Ice Box” set that includes four board books, each featuring different characters (Anna, Elsa, Kristoff & Sven, and Olaf), Retail $10.99
- A Sparkly Nickelodeon Team Umizoomi Board Book entitled “Follow That Egg!”, Retail $6.99
- A Disney Sheriff Callie’s Wild West Lift-the-Flap Book entitled “Callie Saves the Day”, Retail $8.99
- A gift for Moms – AMBR Green Tea Spa Lotion, unknown value
Here are the four Disney Frozen books inside the “Ice Box” set (my favorite of which is definitely the Olaf book):
Here is a peek inside the other two books we got this month:
I like all the books we got this month, although I will admit I was a little disappointed to only get one Easter themed book (the Umizoomi one). In other My First Book Club box reviews I have seen, it looked like they often sent themed packages out with almost all books relating to any holidays that month, so I was definitely expecting more of an Easter theme.
Like I said above, although I do like children’s board books, I want a more well-rounded box to build up my collection, so I did up the age group for my next box. It is nice that they always send a little gift for Mom too. Of the books they sent this month, my favorite is definitely the Umizoomi book. Partly because it is Easter-themed, and partly because it is really sparkly and I do love sparkly things!
I woke up today feeling like I just needed to get out, so went to do a bit of shopping, nothing too exciting as you can see here, but hey, sometimes even routine errands can help get our minds off heavy stuff.
First I stopped at Walmart. As you can see, I am still feeding my Coca Cola addiction. The cough drops are for the hubby who woke up feeling crappy today, and the Carmex is because I’m having some lip pimple or cold sore issues that are driving me crazy. I rarely EVER buy makeup. Lip balm and this kind of Covergirl foundation powder are about all I ever do. Honestly, it isn’t even necessarily an aversion to makeup, but just that #1, I never really learned to do my own makeup, and #2, makeup is expensive and I would rather buy more fun things normally!
I also went to Goodwill, where I found a sweatshirt that was super comfy and almost brand new. Ironically enough, the sweatshirt I bought at Goodwill was almost the exact same price as this brand new t-shirt I bought at Walmart. It seems a little ridiculous to me that Goodwill prices are now about as high as Walmart prices! I know sweatshirts cost more than t-shirts anyhow, but still…
I think the best part of getting out of the house though is just cruising in the car, with the windows down, and cranking up the volume on some of my favorite albums. That might be one of the most therapeutic treatments for depression.
I thought it might be fun to do a shopping blog and show you guys some stuff I got today 🙂 Let me know if you like this kind of thing, I’ve seen other bloggers do posts like this and I enjoy them.
After my therapy appointment today (where we talked about some really heavy stuff and I cried a good part of the session), I did a little bit of shopping to try to cheer myself up. First I went to Dollar Tree, where I absolutely can’t resist the candy:
I’m excited to try the Marshmallow Milky Ways! While there I also bought a few baby things for my new reborn doll that I am expecting soon in the mail. I adore Sesame Street, so I had to get some of their fun stuff and for $1, even if I don’t use it a lot at least it isn’t a big waste of money:
The Sesame Street Baby Wash is actually for me, not the doll. I really like the way it smells, so I’ll use it as bubble bath! The other things are a bathtime book called “Let’s Share” and a toy rattle that will be a fun prop for the baby doll. Lastly, I went to Goodwill and found a few little things there too:
The monkey sleeper outfit is obviously for the doll, but the kids books are for me (I collect children’s books among other things). One of the books I bought simply because it is about ice cream, and the other book is based on The Peanuts Movie.
Fun trivia question: Do you know the name of Snoopy’s three siblings which are featured in the movie? If so, answer in the comments!
I bought this newborn baby outfit from Dollar General (on sale for 50% off) for my new reborn doll. Since I haven’t gotten the doll yet, I stuck it on this Disney “Shake It Up” bunny from Build a Bear. I thought it looked so cute I had to share 🙂
Today was one of those lazy days that I absolutely love. I really didn’t do much of anything all day, other than watch anime, nap, eat and lounge around in my comfy pj’s. The pure enjoyment of being a lazy bum got me thinking about the simple pleasures that really don’t cost much at all, but can add immense happiness to your life if you just take the time to appreciate them. Here are a few of my personal favorites when it comes to simple pleasures:
1. Watching my cats totally spaz out, like Einstein is doing right now. Free entertainment that is totally contagious! It seems when one cat spazzes out, the other two aren’t far behind.
2. A warm bath. I would probably sleep in the tub if I could. I especially like to read a good book while in the bath, although that has led to more than one soggy bookmark.
3. Putting on new socks…especially ones that have cute designs or characters on them. It may be a really girly thing, but I can’t help but smile when I see Miss Piggy smiling up at me from my feet!
4. Taking a nap. One of the best simple pleasures of all. Even though I often wake up groggy and feel crappy afterwards, those few minutes when I curl up on my soft bed and cuddle with my blankie make it all worthwhile.
5. Cookies and cereal! My two favorite comfort foods never fail to cheer me up, even if I do feel a little bloated after indulging. Bonus points if you eat a cereal that is made from cookies!
So what are some of your favorite simple pleasures? I could go on and on about mine, but don’t want to waste too much of your time (see, ain’t I thoughtful?)
